Who We Are

Friends of Lane County Recovery Schools began with passion and hope in 2022.

Our goal is to remove barriers for youth with substance use disorders and promote equity in secondary education for all Lane County students.

We realize that not all students can flourish in a traditional high school setting. For students with a substance use disorder to be successful, it requires a drug and alcohol free peer environment that supports their recovery.

As people passionate about recovery, we believe a recovery high school in Lane County is a must. We decided to investigate the possibility of bringing a recovery high school to our area.

The concept of recovery high schools is not widely known. There are only 45-50 currently operating in the United States. As novices in the education world, this was a tall order.

Two advocates founded Friends of Lane County Recovery Schools (FLCRS), a non-profit dedicated to the establishment of a recovery high school in Lane County. Seven additional members were added to the board of directors from diverse professional backgrounds. Board members began discussions with legislators, educators, business leaders and other interested parties about the possibility of a different approach to educating students in our community. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

In June, 2023 the Oregon Legislature passed HB2767. This bill provides a framework, funding and oversight for up to nine recovery high schools in Oregon.

This legislation turned a dream into reality.

The nine schools will be phased in over the next six years. There will be an application process to be recognized by the State of Oregon as a recovery school.

FLCRS is partnering with Lane Educational Service District (Lane ESD) to complete the application when it becomes available.

Should our application be approved by the state, our intention is to have the school open for students in 2025. We will continue to advocate for our youth and with the help of all our friends and colleagues, we are confident we will be successful!
